AIM 6.9 is released

Check it out! This is the product I was the development lead on before I moved to Open AIM so I feel a certain sense of nostalgia. You can download it off the AIM Website. My favorite feature, and one that I am happy to share, is that the old AIM Running Man is back.

Apart from performance improvements, you can get status updates from your friends on Twitter and other apps. And if you are looking to add buddies, find them easily with the new look up tools. More information available here. You can also find other reviews on Gus’s blog and Greg’s blog.

Stay tuned for a new Open AIM SDK, with the latest API additions that correspond to the AIM 6.9 release.

It would appear that you can no longer log in through the web to check your buddy’s away message. This is the link (buddyinfo.aim.com/) you used to be able to do that, but on 5/6/2009 they started forwarding all traffic to that link instead to this link (http://dashboard.aim.com/aim) where you can no longer check it. This was nice for me at work since I am forbidden from downloading AIM and our firewall doesn’t allow me to use AIM Express at work. Why did AOL change this?

I asked our product team here, it was redirected because it’s not a suppported page anymore, had old branding etc. If you use bebo, you can see their bebo away/status messages there. Or see some data on http://buddyupdates.aim.com/. Also, you can sign into AOL mail, and then use the AIM embedded experience there to IM from work.

Also, does your firewall allow AIM via theboot.com?

I downloaded 6.9…. but I can’t seem to install it to any other drives other than my C drive. it doesnt even give me the option to where I want it installed to.

grr

Nope, it chooses where it installs to and that is your $PROGRAMFILES directory. Have you tried to change that system variable to where you want it installed?

I downloaded AIM 6.9 however had to switch back to 6.8 because it kept making me invisible constantly and then making me visible again whenever it felt like doing it all on its own without me hitting the button or having it selected from the start screen. It started happening often. Do you know why the program does this?

Thats a new issue, we have not heard this reported before. If you go to dev.aol.com/aim and enter a Forum ticket, someone will follow up with you to see why your Screenname is experiencing problems with AIM6.9.

Why does the latest version auto open your browser to http://aimzones.aol.com/ AND HOW THE HELL CAN I TURN THAT “FEATURE” OFF!

I downloaded AIM 6.9 fine, but now when the AIM window opens, it loads completely to the buddy screen, then disappears. I’ve tried downloading again, but it did not fix the problem.
Help!
